Acts 1: 9-12
And when He had spoken these things, while they beheld, He was taken up, and a cloud received Him out of their sight. And while they looked steadfastly toward heaven as He went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel; who also said, "Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? This same JESUS, who is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen Him go into heaven." Then returned they unto Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is from Jerusalem, a Sabbath day's journey."
It is significant that many of the major events in the Life of the ministry of JESUS took place at the Mount of Olives. In the life of David, the Mount of Olives was a holy place (2 Samuel 15:30), and was known to be a place of solitude, quiet and communion with GOD. It is thought that the Sermon on the Mount was given by JESUS from the Mount of Olives. It is said in Scripture that JESUS will return and place His foot on the Mount of Olives and it will split in two.
We are focusing on the Mount of Olives because it was the place where JESUS prayed to his Father before He was taken by the soldiers in the Garden of Gethsemane (Luke 22:39). It was here that He prayed,"NEVER THE LESS, NOT MY WILL BUT THY WILL BE DONE." This was the place of yielding to the Father, not insisting on His own way of self preservation, but yielding to the Father and becoming a sacrifice for the sin of the world. This moment in time was critical for the redemption of the world; JESUS submitted to the will of the Father.
The Mount of Olives heard the cry of the heart and the proclamation of the Gospel; it saw JESUS, the creator of all things and the anointed One, redeemer of the world. THE ANOINTED ONE WENT TO THE MOUNT OF ANOINTING and there He was lifted up to Heaven and will return in like manner.
