Romans 12: 19-21
Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves but, rather, give place unto wrath; for it is written, "Vengeance is mine; I will repay", saith the LORD. Therefore, if thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him drink; for in so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire on his head. Be not overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.
DEARLY BELOVED
The Apostle Paul is calling us his dear friends, beloved of GOD and precious. He is not scolding us for being little children, going about grabbing toys and hoarding them. Instead, he is coming to us as his dearly beloved friends. What does he want us to learn? He wants us to learn the path of GOD'S Love.
Who are the "enemies" that we are to feed and give a cup of water to drink? They are the unbelievers, those who walk apart from GOD and are willing victims of the work of the devil. This is why vengeance is the LORD'S work. He will repay the work done by the devil, meanwhile we are to comfort those who have become his victims. The victims of the devil are made victorious through JESUS; if they will turn to Him and believe on His Name, they will be saved from the destroyer. We are to be a life-line of GOD, giving to their needs, while the LORD saves them.
"Good" can only come from GOD. Good is the only thing that the enemy can not be, because goodness comes from love; and GOD is Love. There is only One who is good, the Father in Heaven. Those are not my words, JESUS said it in Luke 18: 19; and Matthew 19: 17. The only goodness comes from GOD Himself.
This example of the new nature given to us by JESUS is very deep and very intense. We are all confronted with evil deeds done to us. Take heart and take seriously these words from the Apostle Paul. "Be not overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good."
