I Corinthians 11:23-26
For I have received of the LORD that which also I delivered unto you, that the LORD JESUS, the same night in which He was betrayed, took bread; and when He had given thanks, He broke it, and said, Take, eat; this is my body which is broken for you: do this in remembrance of me. After the same manner also He took the cup, when He had supped, saying, This cup is the new testament in My Blood: this do, as often as ye drink it, in remembrance of me. For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do show the LORD'S death till He come.
There are 4 practices in communion which are handed down through the Apostles, and are within the acts and words of JESUS. We will discuss the first three in this commentary and look at the fourth tomorrow.
1. Giving thanks to GOD
2. Remember who lived, died and rose again for our salvation
3. Remember that JESUS will come again.
When we partake of the broken bread and the cup of the New Testament in the Blood of JESUS, we are so filled with awe that the heart felt response is THANKSGIVING. When we REMEMBER the price paid by JESUS so that all might be saved, and we REMEMBER that He is coming again, we partake of the broken bread and the cup with awe filled reverence. It is vital that we remember, lest we forget the sacrifice freely offered out of extreme love. This kind of sacrificial love is rarely seen in our lifetime, but within the communion, we see clearly that kind of love right before our eyes.
In one tradition, these words are spoken at the time of giving the bread and cup to a person: The Body of our Lord Jesus Christ, which was given for thee, preserve thy body and soul unto everlasting life. Take and eat this in remembrance that Christ died for thee, and feed on Him in thy heart by faith, with thanksgiving.
The Blood of our LORD JESUS Christ, which was shed for thee, preserve thy body and soul unto everlasting life. Drink this in remembrance that Christ's Blood was shed for thee, and be thankful.
JESUS PAID IT ALL, ALL TO HIM I OWE. THANK YOU, LORD, FOR SAVING MY SOUL; THANK YOU , LORD FOR MAKING ME WHOLE; THANK YOU, LORD, FOR GIVING TO ME, THY GREAT SALVATION SO RICH AND FREE.
