Exodus 28: 29,30
And Aaron shall bear the names of the children of Israel in the breastplate of judgement upon his heart, when he goeth in unto the Holy Place, for a memorial before the LORD continually. And thou shalt put in the breastplate of judgment the Urim and the Thummim; and they shall be upon Aaron's heart, when he goeth in before the LORD; and Aaron shall bear the judgment of the children of Israel upon his heart before the LORD continually.
The Urim and Thummim are very Holy Stones, warn by the High Priest to discern the will of GOD in matters of National crisis and times of doubt about His will. In Hebrew, the words Urim and Thummim mean Lights and perfections. They operated together by glowing for "yes" and remaining dark for "no". It is thought, by Rabbinical scholars, that the Name of GOD was engraved on them. It is also interesting, that the Urim and Thummim were not used after David's time as King. In 1 Samuel 28:6 we find that when Saul inquired of the LORD, the LORD answered him NOT by dreams nor Urim, nor the prophets. This drove Saul away from GOD and into the clutches of the Witch of Endor.
What can we learn from all of this? What I have learned is that when we want answers to pressing questions, don't seek the LORD in words or signs; talismans or prophets. "Seek the LORD while He wills to be found; call upon Him while He draws near."(Isaiah 55:6). These Holy Stones were given by GOD for a time and for a season; now, because of the Loving, willing sacrifice of JESUS, we have access to the throne of GOD and His Name is upon our heart. In Aaron's time, the Urim and Thummim were next to his heart; now GOD is IN our heart. We don't have to seek any other council, but the council of GOD.
ASK, AND YE SHALL RECEIVE; SEEK AND YE SHALL FIND; KNOCK AND THE DOOR SHALL BE OPEN UNTO YOU.
